An avalanche seriously injured four people Saturday in the Swiss Alps, near the Italian border, and lightly injured a fifth, local police said.

The five, all foreign nationals, were swept away by an avalanche that barrelled down the mountain side near the Grand Saint-Bernard peak in the canton of Valais around 1:40 pm (1240 GMT)," police said.

"All five have been found," Valais police spokesman Jean-Marie Bornet told AFP, adding that the four with serious injuries had been taken by helicopter to nearby hospitals.

"Resuscitation is being carried out, so it is quite serious," he said.

He said harsh weather conditions, heavy winds and thick fog had complicated the search, forcing rescue helicopters to land further away from the avalanche site.
