UN appoints new human rights monitor for N.Korea

The United Nations Human Rights Council appointed on Friday Indonesia’s Marzuki Darusman as its special rapporteur on human rights in North Korea, it said in a statement.

Darusman replaces Thailand’s Vitit Muntarbhorn, who had never been granted access to North Korea by its hardline communist rulers.

In his latest report in March, Muntarbhorn accused the North Korean regime of turning the country “into one big prison”.
