ST GALLEN – Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to break up fans in St Gallen in north-east Switzerland early Wednesday.
Violence erupted in the Espenmoos stadium where fans started to smash up seats and equipment following their team’s 2-0 defeat by FC Bellinzone, according to a statement issued by police.
More than 100 anti-riot police and other officers came under a hail of objects thrown by supporters.
The match was the last to be played at ground before the team switches to a new stadium.
The violence comes just a few weeks before Switzerland co-hosts the 2008 European championships with Austria.
