Vlaams Belang injudge ‘threat’ scandal

BRUSSELS – Belgium’s far right Flemish party, the Vlaams Belang, has become embroiled in a new scandal after one of its members threatened the country’s senior judges.

The controversy surrounds inflammatory comments made by Vlaams Belang politician Gerolf Annemans at a party conference.

Annemans declared he would “never forget the names of those who had sanctioned the party and would be following their career closely.”

Member of the superior justice council, Patrick Mandoux, has made a complaint to the public prosecutor about the remarks.

According to Mandoux, his comments represent an outrage against magistrates who he has criticised or threatened.

Mandoux decided to take the issue to the judicial authorities as it may be a prosecuting offence.

The Vlaams Belang is the new name of the Vlaams Blok.

The Blok changed its name to Belang to get around an anti-racism court ruling.
