Big Brother returns to Belgian TV

22 September 2005

BRUSSELS — Three years after the 4th Big Brother series, Kanaal Twee has announced it will broadcast a 5th series in 2006.

Station director Jo Nachtergaele said Kanaal Twee’s own programmes have proven successful. “Why shouldn’t we bring back a cast-iron format such as Big Brother?”

When Big Brother first appeared in Flanders in 2000, it was the only Flemish production on Kanaal Twee, newspaper ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ reported on Thursday.

After four series, the commercial broadcaster decided in 2003 that the reality show had temporarily run its race. “To be clear, we did not write it off at the time, but simply put it one side,” Nachtergaele said.

And according to the station director, times have since changed: “We are making more Flemish productions than ever. And they’re successful”.

Nachtergaele said Kanaal Twee had “big ambitions” and would continue to focus on its internally-produced programmes.

It is not yet known when the show will return to the TV screen. No decisions have been made over presenters either, but the broadcaster is issuing a call for candidates.
