During the first eight months of this year the number of tourists to visit Flanders increased by one million 3% compared to the same period last year. These figures, released by the organisation Tourism Flanders-Brussels, reflect an upward trend from Russian and Chinese tourists in particular. “The average growth amounts to 2.8% in overnight stays and 4.9% in arrivals and there is an increase throughout Flanders,” remarks the Minister of Tourism of the government of Flanders Geert Bourgeois N-VA. “This is most welcoming if one considers the slack August we experienced this year.” The figures released by Tourism Flanders-Brussels show that tourism to art and cultural  cities grew by 7.7%, but that the trend was slightly downwards 0.9% for tourism in coastal towns. Furthermore there was a striking drop in the number of tourists from the Netherlands and United Kingdom. France brought the biggest absolute growth with 54,000 more overnight stays, followed by the US +51,000, Spain +50,000 and Russia, which was up by 31,000.
