BEIJING – Bad weather kept rowing or sailing competitions grounded on Thursday, but it was a relatively good day otherwise for Belgians athletes at the Olympics in Beijing.

Yoris Grandjean breaks Belgian record
In the men's 50m freestyle, Yoris Grandjean broke the Belgian record.
He swam the event in 22"45. Grandjean, world champion two years ago in the juniors' 50m freestyle, ended fourth in his heat.

He came in 28th place overall, not fast enough to compete in the semi-finals. (Only the fastest 16 qualify).

Grandjean was pleased: "I only swam for the time... Super, another record."

A good Olympic performance for Elise Matthysen
The 16-year-old Elise Matthysen made the semi-finals in the Women's 200m breaststroke, but came in last.

She finished the 200 meters in 2'29"64, two seconds slower than her qualifying time for the semi-final.

On Wednesday, Elise Matthysen swam a Belgian record, bettering Brigitte Becue's record in the 200m breaststroke (2'27"66).

Matthysen leaves the Beijing Olympics with two Belgian records and two Olympic semi-finals to her name.

François Heersbrandt - a disappointing 100m butterfly
François Heersbrandt was not able to come close to the Belgian record. With 53"33 he is still a half a second off.  His time was not enough to qualify for the Men's 100m butterfly semi-finals.

Bad weather keep sailing and rowing grounded
The B final for Christophe Raes and Bart Poelvoorde in doubles rowing has been postponed due to storms. Sailing has also been postponed for Evi Van Acker due to a lack of wind.

Beach Volleyball duo moves on to the next round
The Belgian beach volleyball duo Liesbet Van Breedam and Liesbeth Mouha placed for the next round by beating Georgia in the lucky losers round. They won by 21-13 and 21-19.

In the next round the Belgians will play against the top favourites- the beach volleyball duo from the United States. That match takes place on Friday.
