Europe should keep IMF job if Strauss-Kahn goes: Belgium

Belgium's Finance Minister Didier Reynders argued Monday that the top IMF job should go to a European should Dominique Strauss-Kahn resign following sex assault charges in New York.

"It is preferable that Europe keeps its place at the heart of the IMF," Reynders said on joining two days of talks among European finance ministers that Strauss-Kahn was to have attended prior to his weekend arrest.

"There is for the moment an equilibrium between the United States, with the World Bank, and Europe, at the Fund.

"We have to keep that but before speaking about any of this let's allow Dominique Strauss-Kahn to defend himself," Reynders told reporters.
