BELGIUM - Many day trippers looking forward to a fun day out on Thursday morning had their hopes dashed due to a drunk driver.

The first sunny day of the summer encouraged thousands of people to head for the coast on Thursday, but the Brussels-Ostend motorway was closed from 7am until 4pm due to an accident.

The truck driver was found to be over the drink drive limit. He zigzagged over the carriageway and crashed into the pillar of a bridge outside Ghent.

The truck that turned on its side was carrying 26,000 litres of hydrochloric acid. The content needed to be transferred to another lorry before the motorway could be reopened.

At one point there was a 17 km tailback as a result of the accident.

Red Cross workers handed out bottles of water to stranded drivers.

The fine, sunny weather encouraged thousands to make the trip to the coast. 30,000 passengers took Belgian Rail services to the coast. The rail company ran 12 extra services.
