Belgian Luc Costermans breaks speed record for the blind while driving a Lamborghini Gallardo.

ISTRES -- Belgian Luc Costermans broke the speed record for the blind Saturday while driving a Lamborghini Gallardo on an airstrip in the south of France.

The 43-year-old drove at a speed of 308.78 km/h at the Istres Air Base, taking over the record from Briton Mike Newman whose BMW M5 reached 268km/h in 2005.

The former pilot became blind in 2004 after an accident.

Although born in Brussels, Costermans has lived in the south of France since 1989.

Speaking after his successful record attempt, Costermans told journalists that he was really happy.

He thanked his French co-pilot Guillaume Roman, the French Army, Istres Air Base and the owner of the Lamborghini.

In 2006, Costermans completed a tour of France piloting a light aeroplane over 1,900 km where he was accompanied by an instructor and a navigator.
