Belgium adds iodine to bread

Belgian bakeries and the Public Health Ministry have agreed that bread baked in Belgium will in future only contain salt that has iodine added.

The move should help to address the iodine shortage in the Belgian population.

Belgians do not consume enough iodine. The problem has obvious for many years.

A shortage of iodine can lead to a slow heartbeat, fatigue, depression and low fertility.

Until now Belgian loaves were baked with ordinary salt.

The change should not throw up any problems for bakers. Salt with added iodine does not cost significantly more than ordinary salt.

And there is no difference in the taste.

The Health Ministry thought of bread because it's a healthy food that forms an essential part of the Belgian diet.
