A study has revealed that the Belgians are the world champions when it comes to picking up and cutting out discount coupons. Open up a newspaper or magazine and you're sure to find at least one coupon offering a few eurocents off some or other leading brand. Some supermarket chains such as Delhaize and Colruyt even produce booklets containing dozens of coupons.

It's not surprising then that many of us do our weekly shopping with our wallets packed with discount coupons.

Furthermore, once inside the supermarket it is often possible to collect dozens of extra coupons all of which can be exchanged at the checkout for a cash rebate or extra loyalty card points.

Our love of discount coupons has not come about as a result of current worries about falling purchasing power.

Belgians love discount coupons in good times as well as bad.

Last year a total of 142 million such coupons were used.

Their total value was around 100 million €. It is believed that these figures will be exceeded in 2008.

Meanwhile, the fall in purchasing power means that more and more Belgians are shopping at discount retailers such as Aldi and Lidl.
