A two-and-a-half year old toddler at the crèche climbed into her baby’s bed and staff failed to respond when her child started crying

A mother has reported a Brussels crèche to the Flemish child care authority Kind en Gezin after her baby was left scarred by a toddler. The incident happened last week at a crèche in the municipality of Anderlecht.

The baby’s mother told the Francophone daily ‘La Dernière Heure’ that a two-and-a-half year old toddler that was also being cared for at the crèche climbed into her baby’s bed and that staff failed to respond when her child started crying.

The baby sustained severe scratches to his face.

Kind en Gezin has now launched an investigation into the incident.

Leen Du Bois of Kind en Gezin told the VRT that "the investigation will examine whether there was enough supervision, because children must be supervised even if they’re asleep”.

Ms Du Bois added that "we will also examine whether the toddler’s actions were simply those of an impulsive young child or if other factors came into play”.

The toddler’s mother has already apologised to the mother of the injured baby.

Kind en Gezin expects the results of the investigation to be published by the end of the month.

"We will take the necessary steps, if any failings are found on the part of the crèche."

"We will also carry out a second investigation at a later date”, Ms Du Bois explained.
