In the port of Brussels a serious fire broke out at a company that recycles cars and metals. The smoke and smell of burning spread throughout the neighbourhood.

The fire broke out at around 12 p.m. and spread quickly. No one was hurt in the blaze but the damage is said to have been considerable. The calm day meant that the smoke and smell of gas and metal are lingered for hours around the north of Brussels.

The authorities believe that the fire started in the area where gas canisters are stored and spread quickly throughout the building. Vilvoorde Street had to be blocked off because there was danger of an explosion occurring. This is no longer a threat according to reports throughout the afternoon.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
