BELGIUM - Belgium's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest failed to get any further than the semi-finals in the Serbian capital Belgrade on Tuesday night.

The Flemish band Ishtar and their song "O julissi" were not a hit with telephone voters across Europe.

Ishtar had hoped to sway voters with a song sung in a non-existent language that does sound rather Slavonic.

Ishtar singer Soetkin Baptist was clearly disappointed. She had hoped that the band would make it into the finals.

Baptist has no regrets though: "Taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest was a fabulous adventure. We are staying in Belgrade for a few more days, but last night's semi-finals did form the culmination of our trip."

The singer added: "Our stage performance on Tuesday was the best one since we got here and we really had the crowd with us."

Soetkin Baptist says the band cannot be reproached anything: "We had hoped we'd surprise TV viewers across the continent, but clearly that didn't work."

The singer said her only regret was that she had disappointed her Flemish fans. Ishtar intends to remain in Belgrade until Sunday and will certainly be following the further progress of the contest.
