Follow the 'First European Presidential Debate' live

The city of Maastricht (Netherlands) is hosting a long-awaited debate between four leading candidates for the presidency of the European Commission tonight. The event will commence around 7pm.

The debate takes place in Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht and is scheduled to start around 7:00pm CET.

It will involve the leading candidates for the presidency of the European Commission (Jean-Claude Juncker of the European People's Party, Martin Schulz (Party of the European Socialists), Belgium's Guy Verhofstadt (Alliance of Lilberals and Democrats for Europe Party) and Ska Keller (European Green Party).

They will discuss key European issues such as unemployment, the economy, the future of the EU and the rise in scepticism towards the EU project, immigration, European foreign policies and people's engagement in politics.

There will be an audience of some 700 people, mainly youngsters as the debate is being held in partnership with the European Youth Forum and the University of Maastricht.

The four candidates will also answer questions from youngsters across Europe.

The debate will be moderated by Euronews lead presenter Isabelle Kumar, Chris Burns and Mark Davis.

The event is expected to last 90 minutes. / Expatica
