BELGIUM - In July, the Flemish Employment and Vocational Training Service (VDAB) had 15 percent fewer vacancies on offer than in the same period in 2007, according to the Flemish financial daily De Tijd.

The summer months usually see a drop in the number of vacancies on the labour market, but this time the drop is bigger than usual.
There were 24,617 vacancies in July 2007, and only 20,842 in July 2008.

"Companies don't want to rush things when taking on new staff", explains Nancy Vercammen of the VDAB.

"On the other hand, they will have to replace employees taking retirement." Vercammen stresses that it's too early to draw major conclusions.

The decline in the number of jobs on offer was expected.

Earlier in 2008, temping agencies had already seen a drop and they usually set the trend.
