First snowfalls on the way

The first snow of the winter could materialise by the weekend.

Belgian weather forecasters say that powerful northerly winds are carrying polar air to our climes and wintry conditions should be with us by Friday.

At higher altitudes air temperatures as low as minus 35 Celsius are expected. In combination with relatively high sea temperatures this should result in wintry showers.

Sleet is expected across Flanders and snow may occur in some places.

Any snow hitting the pavement will disappear more or less immediately.

Several centimetres of snow are expected in the woodlands of the Ardennes.

Wintry conditions are predicted across the continent with the Alps particularly badly affected.
