Belgium is deploying special forces to protect its ambassador and diplomats in Ivory Coast, the foreign ministry said Monday amid fears of civil war following a disputed presidential election.

Twelve paratroopers specialised in protecting embassies and staff will protect the Belgian mission in Abidjan, which has around 15 employees and no permanent security detail, said foreign ministry spokesman Bart Ouvry.

The soldiers are stationed in the region and will arrive in Ivory Coast soon.

Incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and his old rival Alassane Ouattara have both sworn themselves in as president and each appointed their own prime ministers following the November 28 election.
