One tram hit another in the side between the stops of Brussels South station and Lemonnier early in the afternoon. One of the vehicles derailed. There were no reports of serious injuries, although 16 passengers sustained light injuries.

"Things could have been much worse", fire services claim.

The accident happened on the lines 3 and 82, in a tunnel below the Anspach Avenue, around 1:40pm.

Some 16 passengers were brought to hospital, in some cases as a precaution as none of them was badly injured.

According to Pierre Meys of the Brussels fire services, the city escaped a small disaster.

"Things could have been much worse if the accident had happened around 5pm, when the trams are usually packed with people."

Tram services in the area of Brussels South were disrupted for most of the afternoon.

It is not yet clear how the accident could happen.
