9 July 2007

LEIGE – The body of the young man who jumped into the Meuse River on Friday night in Liege has been recovered. The man jumped into the river after being chased by police. His body was pulled from the water on Monday.

Police were called by a victim who had been robbed by a man on bicycle, 23-year-old Rachid K. from Grivegnée, in the rue Grétry in Liege. After officers arrived on the scene and the victim had pointed out the perpetrator, the officers tried to arrest the man.

In trying to escape police the young man climbed onto the wall that leads to the Meuse. After police tried in vain to talk him down, the man jumped into the water, shouting at the same time that he was unable to swim.

The body was found today at the location where the suspect had jumped into the water. The fire brigade extracted the body, which was lodged in the mud. The Liege police have informed the family of the drowned man of the circumstances of his death.
