The Lyon brothers triumph

Juniors Chris Lyon and Matt Lyon of St. John’s International School became European High School Wrestling Champions on Saturday in Wiesbaden.

The brothers, one of four sets of brothers in Saturday’s championship bouts, put on a clinic to become the only set of the four to collect two gold medals. Each Lyon completed a 32-0 season. Chris Lyon dominated Konner Higgins of AFNORTH 8-0 in the class up to 135 pounds, and Matt Lyon, voted most valuable wrestler of the event, topped the 145-pound class with a win over Wiesbaden freshman Michael Spencer.

The Lyon brothers came to St. John’s from the U.S. at the start of this school year, along with their triplet brother and a sister who is in eighth-grade.

Appropriately, the St. John’s sports teams are nicknamed the “St. John’s Lions”. The students requested the school to start a wrestling program for them and, along with their mother as the coach, completed a perfect first season.
