AMSTERDAM — Current affairs show NOVA broadcast on Thursday night parts of the video testament of terror suspect Samir A.
The film is important to the public prosecution office to prove that A. planned to carry out terrorist attacks in the Netherlands.
A prosecution spokesman said such pieces of evidence should not be published, but refused to comment further. Samir A.’s lawyer, Victor Koppe, was unavailable to comment.
The video shows A. dressed in traditional clothing with a machine gun leaning against a wall behind him. The video is an imitation of al-Qaeda videos. The text spoken by A. is also a reminder of al-Qaeda videos.
A. says in Arabic that he wants to take revenge for the injustices that Muslims undergo across the entire world. Police found the video tape when he was arrested last October.
The video’s message is directed at “the Muslims in Europe, my parents, my brothers in the jails of the despots and the government and people of the Netherlands”.
“You crusaders support [US President George W.] Bush when he said: Let the crusades begin. So we speak the language of the sword until you leave Muslims in peace,” A. said.
A. is the main suspect in the so-called Piranha investigation. He and co-suspects are accused of planning terrorist attacks.
In previous terror investigations, A. was acquitted or released due to a lack of evidence, but the prosecution appears to have more evidence this time.
The court case will start on 16 October.
