Less anti-social behaviour on buses and trams

This is down 23 percent on the figures for 2012.

The figures are published in Thursday’s editions of the dailies ‘Gazet van Antwerpen’ and ‘Het Belang van Limburg’.

According to De Lijn, the reduction in the number of passengers behaving badly can be mainly attributed to the work of inspectors rather than to the presence of security cameras on buses and trams.

De Lijn’s Tom Van de Vreken told the papers that "The cameras have been there for some time anyway."

Over the past couple of years the number of passengers checked has increased by 20 percent from 1.5 million to 1.8 million. The checks are made both to tackle anti-social and to catch those travelling without a ticket.

Anti-social behaviours includes disrupting bus and/or tram services, serious breaches of the peace, damage to vehicles and refusing to follow instructions given by drivers or inspectors aboard busses and trams.

Fines for anti-social behaviour on services opperated by De Lijn range from EUR 75 to EUR 500.
