Kidnappers of sailors in Cameroon demand money

The kidnappers of a Croatian and a Filipino sailor two weeks ago at Cameroon’s port city of Douala have demanded a large sum of money for their release, a Cameroonian source told AFP.

The kidnappers first contacted port officials then the Belgian owner of the vessel the sailors worked on with their ransom demand.

“They said they wanted lots of money,” the source close to Cameroonian investigators told AFP, without specifying the ransom amount.

A group of men armed with rocket launchers kidnapped the two sailors from their vessel dredging the channel in the port of Cameroon’s economic hub during the night of September 12-13.

The kidnappers said they were holding four other persons, but investigators do not know their nationality, added the source.

A government official refused to comment on the kidnapping.

“There is a total ‘blackout’ on the Douala hostages,” said the official.
