Fewer deaths on our roads

That’s according to figures released by the Belgian Road Safety Institute (BIVV). The number of road traffic accidents during the weekends also fell.

266 people died on Belgium’s roads in the period from January 1 to June 30 2016. This is just under 10% fewer than died on the roads in the same period last year.

In Flanders saw by far the greatest fall in road death (down 17). Meanwhile, there were 4 fewer road deaths in the Brussels-Capital Region and 3 fewer in Wallonia.

As regards the number of accidents, there were 3.7% fewer road traffic in Wallonia during the first six months of this compared to the same period last year. At 1.6% the fall in Wallonia was less pronounced. Meanwhile, in Brussels there were 2.4% more accidents. 

Never before were there so few accident at the weekend

The fall in the number of accidents was especially pronounced at the weekend. The number of accidents during night time hours at the weekend fell by 6.4%.

During the first six months of this year 44 people died on the roads during night time hours at the weekend, the lowest figure since records began. This compares with 104 road deaths during the first half of 2006.
