BRUSSELS – A first digital speed camera has been installed in Brussels. The speed camera located on the Lambermontlaan is the first of its kind in the country.
The digital camera offers far more possibilities than a conventional analogue one.
The camera can make recordings of all four lanes of the carriageway. One thousand photos can be taken instead of the conventional 400.
The camera data is dispatched via hyper optic fibres and in this way the drivers can be identified by their number plate.
The speed camera can also calculate the speed of the traffic without taking a photograph and can work out how many vehicles run a red light.
In Brussels speed cameras can be activated at 61 locations across the city.
At present there are 18 analogue cameras that are switched from one spot to another.
Soon it should be possible to take photos at no fewer than 90 locations across the city. This will be done using 18 analogue cameras and 12 digital ones.
