Electricity consumption down by ten per cent

Electricity use by companies was down by a fifth, while domestic use was down by 3%. The fall in domestic electricity use is due to the relatively mild spring, while the economic recession has caused the fall in commercial use.

The fall in electricity use means that Belgium has been self-sufficient in electricity for the first time in years. 

Since May of this year, Belgium has even exported more electricity than it has imported. 

Elia stresses that the figures only give a general picture and do not take into account electricity produced by solar panels and wind turbines installed at private homes and business premises.
