Dutroux appeal rejected

16 December 2004

BRUSSELS – Belgium’s supreme court has rejected an appeal against their sentences by child murderer Marc Dutroux and his ex-wife Michelle Martin.

On Wednesday evening the court rejected claims by Dutroux and Martin’s lawyers that the two had not faced a fair trial earlier this year, because the proceedings attracted huge media coverage.

The court said that the media interest in the case did not mean, “the judges and jury of the court of assizes were not impartial.”

Dutroux was jailed for life in June this year after being found guilty of abducting and raping six girls in the mid-1990s, four of whom died.

Martin was given 30 year jail sentence for complicity in Dutorux’s crimes.
