Crane protest ended

25 April 2008

BRUSSELS – Three illegal immigrants that climbed up a crane saw their protest came to an end on Friday.

After around three hours of trying, officers from the Brussels fire brigade finally succeeded in bringing the men down from the crane.

The three illegal immigrants had scaled the crane near the Brussels North Railway Station on Tuesday.

A fourth man who joined them on Wednesday evening was also brought back down to ground level.

Three of the four men climbed up the crane in order to put pressure on the authorities to grant them leave to stay in Belgium. A fourth man hoped to speed up his application for Belgian citizenship.

Another protester came down the crane on Wednesday after becoming unwell.

The construction company has been unable to use the crane since Tuesday morning and had demanded that the authorities take action to end the protest.
