BRUSSELS — The Belgian Food Agency has urged all shops and supermarkets to remove Sobelco products from their market shelves immediately.
The agency wants to investigate which products are still suitable for consumption and those that aren’t.
The request came after 100 tons of out-of-date food products, some of them dating back to 1999, were seized in a surprise raid at the distribution firm Sobelco in Jumet.
Authorities suspect that over-date food has been sold on the Belgium market for up to five years with forged use-by dates.
The food agency has since said it does not want to take any risks and urged shops to stop selling Sobelco products.
Larger food chains have already said they had not bought any of the Sobelco products.
However, Sobelco also supplied small business and late-night shops.
