BRUSSELS – The third edition of Bruges’ Snow and Ice Festival got underway Friday and is set to enchant visitors until 11 January.
Dozens of ice and snow sculptors from all over the world are participating in the festival, carving sculptures from 250,00 kilos of ice to the theme of ‘Realm of the Gods’.
Included in the Realm of the Gods is the labyrinth of King Minos, the Olympus, and Hades’ underworld.
Highlights this year are an ice tunnel, an ice bar with video projections, an ice school where visitors can try different techniques in ice sculpture, and an ice hotel where people can actually spend the night.
Some festival participants have already tested out the ice beds covered with animal skins.
The ice hotel’s proceeds will go to the charity Poverello and Sint-Clara, a centre for childcare and family support in Bruges.
The sculpture festival, on the square in front of the railway station in Bruges, is open daily from 10am to 9pm. The entrance price is EUR 9 for adults, EUR 5 for children between the ages of 6 and 12, and EUR 7 for senior citizens, groups, and persons with disabilities.
