Brad buys Angelina a Flemish master
23 June 2008
BELGIUM – The American film star Brad Pitt has bought Angelina Jolie a painting by the renowned Antwerp painter Luc Tuymans.
Pitt acquired the work, as well as two bronze chairs and a matching table at Art Basel in Switzerland.
Entitled L’Archiduc, the painting depicts the art deco interior of the Brussels café by the same name.
Painted in 1979, L’Archiduc is one of Tuymans’ early and lesser known works. The artist made the painting after an evening out in the renowned Brussels jazz café. A popular spot with artists, the Archiduc is featured in every tourist book on Brussels.
According to the Antwerp gallery owner that sold him the painting, Pitt was besotted by it from the moment he set eyes on it.
"He came round at least three times to look at it and then decided to buy it," Frank Demaegd of Zeno X gallery in Antwerp says.
How much the American actor paid for the painting has not been revealed.
