Belgium rail strike to hit international services

Belgian rail workers were to start a 24-hour strike on Thursday that will halt most trains including international services to Britain and France.

The strike called by a socialist rail unions said the industrial action would begin at 2000 GMT with some disruption earlier, Belgian rail firm SNCB said.

Eurostar trains from London to Brussels on Friday will instead stop at Lille in northern France, with all Thalys train services to Paris are cancelled until late on Friday.

Rail workers are protesting against reforms planned by the government of Prime Minister Charles Michel.

Tens of thousands of protesters demonstrated in Brussels on Wednesday against Michel’s austerity measures.
