BELGIUM – Some 20,000 Belgian tourists who withdrew money with their Maestro bankcards in France in August had money deducted from their account twice due to a technical error.
The double withdrawals took place between 31 July and 8 August in France. The daily Het Nieuwsblad reports that a technical problem with the bankcard administrator itself was responsible for the problem.
The 20,000 Belgians affected by the problem have accounts at various banks – not just one or two.
The Maestro bankcard administrator in Belgium, Atos, discovered that a number of withdrawals were registered twice. The mistake has been rectified, explains Michel Dasnoy of Atos.
"Everyone whose account was debited twice will notice that their money has been re-deposited," says Dasnoy.
