Belgians ready to pay for TV video on demand

27 May 2005

BRUSSELS – One out of every two Belgians is prepared to pay for video on demand on home television screens, according to a survey released Friday.

The “Future TV” survey of 1,015 Belgians age 15 to 65 found that video on demand is most popular among the upper classes, whereas lower classes benefit from a larger offer of channels.

The results of the survey, taken by telephone between 2-13 May, were published on the RTL.be website.

Besides video on demand, respondents also said they would find a personal video recorder (which allows the recording of programmes on a central disc) and being able to order official documents.

All three services are part of what is known as interactive television, which would among other things allow consumers to surf the internet via their TV sets with the opportunity to choose from a wide menu of channels.
