1 June 2004

BRUSSELS – A Belgian tourist was among five people killed when the boat in which they were travelling on Europe’s biggest underground lake capsized, it was reported on Monday.

The five tourists were among 27 people visiting Lake Hinterbruhel in Austria when the accident happened.

The flat-bottomed boat the tourists were travelling in capsized shortly after leaving a jetty on the shore of the underground lake.

Most of the occupants managed to swim to safety, but the five people who died were trapped underneath the boat and drowned.

The other four people who drowned were German.

Lake Hinterbruhel covers an area of 6,200 square metres and is just 2 metres deep.

It is visited every year by around 200,000 tourists.
