Rapist footballer recaptured
A former footballer who played for the Flanders club Lokeren has been arrested in Angers, in France. In January, a Belgian court found the player guilty of rape, but he went on the run in July, reported the news agency Belga.
New ethics code mooted for police
Interior minister Patrick Dewael wants to see tougher ethical rules applied to police officers. His proposals come after a series of cases in recent weeks where officers have been charged for abusing their positions. Dewael says a new code will be discussed by the government early next year which would inform the public of the standards they should expect from officers. It would also introduce stricter standards into existing ethics exams.
Cameras pledged for Belgian train stations
Belgium’s rail company SNCB announced on Wednesday that it intends to install surveillance cameras at 50 of the most important stations on its network. The newspaper La Derniere Heure reported that the cameras would be progressively introduced from early next year and it would take two years to introduce them at smaller stations.
