BRUSSELS – A Belgian lawyer has joined the team of over 20 international legal experts who will defend former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein at his trial in Baghdad, it was reported on Monday.
The Belga news agency, citing reports on the UK’s BBC, said that Brussels based lawyer Dominique Grisay would be joining Saddam’s defence team.
According to one of the former dictator’s lawyers, Mohammed al-Rashan, around 1,500 lawyers from all over the world offered to defend Saddam.
The most high profile member of the ex-Iraqi leader’s defence team is perhaps Aisha Gadaffi, daughter of the Libyan leader who recently visited Belgium and the EU institutions on a much-publicised bridge building trip.
Other Saddam lawyers hail from the United States, the United Kingdom, Lebanon and France.
Saddam’s trial began last Thursday, and the former dictator immediately made it clear he did not recognise the legitimacy of the court he was appearing in front of.
