24 July 2006

BRUSSELS — A further 100 Belgian evacuees from Lebanon arrived home in Belgium via Syria on Sunday night and Monday morning.

The evacuees arrived at the Melsbroek air base from Syria. Another 30 Belgians arrived via Paris after boarding a French flight in Lebanon.

The Belgian Defence Ministry has repatriated more than 1,000 foreign nationals from Lebanon in recent days, most of them Belgian nationals.

In total, some 850 Belgians have fled the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, broadcaster VTM reported.

Belgian authorities have also helped evacuated US, Italian, Dutch and Lebanese citizens.

Meanwhile, Belgian charity groups have also urged for financial donations as the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon mounts.
