South African woman in demon ritual theft charge
A South African woman is fighting fraud charges for stealing casino patrons' jewellery after pretending they were for good luck rituals with an African demon.
Nancy Shanelle Naidoo promised customers a tokoloshe -- a mythical sprite-like creature -- would bring them luck while gambling after she prayed over their possessions.
But after taking the possessions for the rituals, she never returned the perfume, watches, bracelets and necklaces from luxury brands like Gucci and Michel Herbelin, reported the Sunday Times.
Prosecutors have charged the 34-year-old with defrauding casino-goers of over two million rand ($210,000, 160,000 euro) at casinos in the eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.
The 53 charges include drugging some victims before making off with their possessions.
Some rural and urban South Africans strongly believe in the existence of tokoloshes.
Thought to be a small, evil-doing being, the tokoloshe regularly gets blamed for disease, rape and misfortune.
