RugbyU: Currie Cup champs shave captain's beard
A South African rugby player known for the bushy beard he grew as a sign of love for his long-distance girlfriend lost the famous facial hair when teammates snuck up on him and shaved it off.
Golden Lions captain Joshua Strauss, nicknamed "Caveman" by fans, started growing the beard last year when he moved to Johannesburg to join the team, promising his girlfriend he would grow it until she could move the 1,400 kilometres (870 miles) from Cape Town to join him.
But after the Lions won the South African Currie Cup final Saturday, Strauss' teammates celebrated by attacking the full face-and-neck beard with an electric razor as he sat down to dinner, local media reported Monday.
"They caught me off-side," Strauss told the Sapa news agency.
"The guys said they were going to do it, but after nothing happened in the dressing room, I relaxed and thought they would let it go."
The loose forward said his new clean-shaven look wouldn't last long.
"I've already started growing my beard for the Super Rugby season," he said.
