A 79-year-old Briton flying on holiday to Turkey was pronounced dead at Sofia airport after falling ill on the flight which was then diverted to Bulgaria, aviation officials said Tuesday.

The female passenger was on a Thomas Cook charter flight whose pilot requested permission to land late Monday after she lost consciousness, Sofia airport said.

Crew members told medics on the ground that the woman had high blood pressure and weak pulse and her death was confirmed on arrival.

The plane was flying from the city of Manchester in northeast England towards the southwestern Turkish resort area of Bodrum on the Aegean coast.
