No-frills British airline easyJet on Monday said that the volcanic ash cloud from Iceland had so far cost the group about 40 million pounds (45 million euros, 61 million dollars) in lost business.

"Based on our initial estimates the cumulative profit impact, up to and including 19 April 2010, representing both the lost contribution and additional costs, is around 40 million pounds," easyJet said in a statement.

"The continuing daily profit impact is estimated to be around five million pounds."

easyJet said the closure of most European airspace forced the airline to cancel 4,500 flights over the past five days, representing 85 percent of its schedule.

"We estimate that this has displaced about 200,000 passengers," it said.
