A woman arrested in Sanaa on suspicion of having sent two parcel bombs on US-bound flights was released on Sunday on condition she make herself available for further questioning, a Yemeni official said.

"She has been released on the sole condition that she presents herself to the authorities whenever requested," said the official on condition of anonymity.

Mohammed al-Samawi, the father of Hanane al-Samawi, a 22-year-old medical student at Sanaa University, confirmed that the young woman and her mother had both been released.

The student was detained on Saturday together with her mother after being tracked down through a mobile number on a receipt for the explosives-filled packages, officials said.

Abdul Rahman Barman of Yemeni rights group Hood said earlier he doubted Samawi was behind the plot as she had no known Islamist links and Al-Qaeda was unlikely to have left an incriminating phone number on the packages.

Hundreds of students rallied at Sanaa University to call for her release.
