Britain's Prince William and Kate Middleton will visit Canada from June 30 to July 8 in their first overseas royal tour as a married couple, St James's Palace said Wednesday.

"Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton have accepted an invitation from the Government of Canada to undertake a Royal Tour of Canada," the palace said in a statement.

The visit by the second in line to the throne and his bride will include Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Prince Edward Island, Quebec and the capital Ottawa, it said.

A palace spokesman confirmed it would be the couple's first official overseas visit following their marriage in London's Westminster Abbey scheduled for April 29.

A detailed itinerary of William and Kate's trip will be released at a later date by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the palace said.

William, the son of heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana, visited Vancouver aged 15 in 1998 with his father and brother Prince Harry.

Diana died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, the year after she and Charles divorced.

Canada is a realm, meaning that British monarch Queen Elizabeth II is its head of state and sovereign and William is not a foreign royal but a prince of Canada.

The queen went to Canada last July and in 2009 Charles and his second wife Camilla also visited.
