British Foreign Secretary William Hague on Wednesday condemned escalating violence against protesters in Ukraine and said the government should be held accountable, amid growing calls for sanctions against Kiev.

"Violence against peaceful protestors is unacceptable and the Ukrainian government should be held accountable," Hague said in a statement on Twitter.

He confirmed he would be attending an emergency meeting of European Union foreign ministers on Thursday, where the issue of sanctions against the Ukrainian government will be on the table.

The meeting was called after a bloody upsurge in violence in Kiev on Tuesday, which left at least 25 people dead.
