US defence secretary welcomes news of WikiLeaks arrest
US Defence Secretary Gates, who was visiting Afghanistan on Tuesday, welcomed news that British police had arrested WikiLeaks chief Julian Assange.
"I hadn't heard that but it sounds like good news to me," Gates told reporters while visiting American troops at Forward Operating Base Connolly in eastern Afghanistan when asked for reaction to Assange's arrest.
The 39-year-old Australian went to a London police station and was arrested on suspicion of rape after surrendering to a Swedish warrant. He is due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates Court later in the day.
The net tightened around the former computer hacker since his whistleblower website began releasing thousands of secret US diplomatic cables last week, infuriating Washington and other countries.
