A British couple were killed when a private plane crashed on the French Riviera, the Foreign Office said Saturday.

The Piper plane was flying from Tuscany in Italy when radio contact was lost and the wreckage was found on a mountainside near Menton on the Mediterranean coast near the Italian border on Friday, French police said.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the deaths of two British nationals following a plane crash in the south of France.

"Next of kin have been informed and we are providing consular assistance."

British media named the couple as James Balmer and his wife Jacqueline.
