A masterpiece by British painter JMW Turner sold for 29.7 million pounds in London on Wednesday, setting a new record for the sale of one of his works at auction.

"Modern Rome -- Campo Vaccino" was bought for the equivalent of 44.9 million dollars or 35.7 million euros at Sotheby's by a dealer bidding on behalf of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the auction house said.

The previous auction record for a Turner work was 20.5 million pounds, which was set by "La Donne della Salute and San Giorgio" in April 2006, it said in a statement.
